4/30/2018 4 Comments So What? The Diary of Anne Frank matters because it is one of the only firsthand accounts available to the public today from someone who actually experienced the Holocaust. It is important that people understand what it was like to go through such a tragic event. The most valuable idea from this book is that anything is possible when you have loved ones supporting you. Even though Anne Frank, Margot Frank, Edith Frank, Hermann van Pels, Peter van Pels, Auguste van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer all died in the camps, they did their best to stay together for all those years of hiding in the Secret Annex. The book ends with Anne Frank talking about how her personality is "a bundle of contradictions." Anne is usually very flirty and easy-going, but whenever she tries to show her softer, quieter side to people they either think she is in a bad mood or sick. "Sometimes I wonder if anyone will ever understand what I mean, If anyone will ever overlook my ingratitude and not worry about whether or not I’m Jewish and merely see me as a teenager badly in need of some good plain fun" (Anne Frank, page #153)

4/23/2018 1 Comment Current Day ConnectionsI am researching and reading a book about the Holocaust. Though some people many not realize it, the Holocaust still affects our world today. Because of the effects of the Holocaust, there have been a lot of advancements in the protection of international human rights. Also, many countries nowadays have plans for what to do with refugees that are coming into the country. The events in the Holocaust relate to our present society because, as I have just showed, many different laws and policies have been put in place to prevent events that happened in the Holocaust from happening again.

It is about a Jewish girl named Anne Frank who lived during the Holocaust. She writes about her life before Hitler became Chancellor of Germany and when her family was in hiding from the Nazis. The Holocaust was a time from 1939-1945 when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party captured all Jews in Germany and sent them to concentration camps to be killed. The events in the book relate to the real life events because Anne was a real girl and she explains events as they happen that also happened in real life. The people in Germany during the Holocaust knew of the horrors of concentration camps.
2/9/2018 0 Comments Homeless Animals Homeless animals is a big problem in the community today, though we might not notice it. There are about 70 million stray animals living in the U.S. Of this 70 million, only about six to eight million cats and dogs enter the nation's 3,500 shelters every year (Humane Society of the United States). That means there are many, many animals out there that need a home. Animals become homeless because owners leave them on the side of the road or there isn’t enough room at the shelter so they get euthanized. Other animals are born without a home due to other homeless animals. We need to find a safe place for these animals to live for the remainder of their lives.
We are interested in helping homeless animals because we all have animals of our own. We care about them so very much. It is our hope that other animals will be loved by an owner, just as much as we love our pets. We hate it when our pets are sick or hurt and we would like to help other animals that are possibly suffering. Loving an animal can have a huge impact on both lives. From a sick stray on the side of the road, to a strong, happy, and healthy member of a family. You should care about this issue because it affects your safety and it should make you feel rather sad that there are so many animals out there without a home. Homeless animals could get hit by a car on a highway. They are also being killed for no good reason other than no one wants them. Loving animals in need has the capacity to change the lives of both animals and people. Giving animals a safe home will improve their lives by making them happier and healthier. Overall, you should care about helping homeless animals because it’s the right thing to do. Homeless animals in the U.S.A. outnumber homeless people 5 to 1. The issue of homeless animals in Wake County is a big problem for our community. It is expensive for the shelters to take in homeless animals and it costs a lot of money for taxpayers. Last year in Wake County, 5,246 dogs were taken to shelters. Out of that number, 3,157 were adopted, 1,164 were returned to their owners and 899 were euthanized. The cost is $282.45 per animal handled at the shelter. That is a lot of money spent on animals. This has been going on for a very long time. The animals that don’t get adopted are euthanized. There were 899 dogs, 1,251 cats, 3 rabbits, and 141 wildlife euthanized last year in Wake County. Euthanizing animals taxpayers a lot of money. Not only does euthanizing animals cost money but it is also cruel to put down animals that are not suffering and are merely homeless. The cause of the high number of homeless animals can be linked to overbreeding. Another cause is that owners don’t always spay or neuter their animals. Sometimes it’s because they don’t have the money to take proper care for their. Some owners don’t realize the commitment and responsibility of taking care of an animal. Responsibilities include, paying for food, shelter, shots and neutering. A lot of people think that the Humane Society can care for all unwanted pets but it is hard to provide space for all of the homeless animals. The issue of homeless animals is a large one. It is estimated that 17 million homeless animals are killed in shelters each year (Best Friends Animal Society). There are many organizations in our community that have recognized this issue and are dedicated to making a difference. Organizations such as, C.A.R.E. For Animals, Second Chance Pet Adoptions, Best Friend Animal Society, and other various humane organizations have dedicated themselves to this issue. “Today, more than 4,100 dogs and cats are killed in animal shelters across the country, just because they don't have safe places to call home. But Best Friends is working with you to reduce that number to zero by the year 2025.” (Best Friends Animal Society). Organizations like these are doing their best to lower the statistics of homeless animal deaths. Such missions of these organizations are to rehabilitate animals that were abused and abandoned, as well as find a permanent home that will love these animals forever. There is still so much we can and need to do to improve our community. Many animals are still without a caring and permanent home. We all can play our part by donating money and food to no-kill shelters and give animals the love they deserve. Neutering and spaying animals will also help prevent more homeless animals being born into a harsh and unforgiving environment. Some organizations such as, Best Friends Animal Society, are working to pass laws that legally require shelters to report their numbers. The hope is that this law will spread to all parts of the country. (Best Friends Animal Society). If will all participates in caring for these companions, be it by adopting or donating to shelters, we can improve the lives of animals and people alike. One thing I can do personally is to volunteer, donate money or food to shelters. I could volunteer at shelters or organizations that need help taking care of any animals, cleaning, and anything else that I could assist with. I could also ask around for people to donate to a no-kill shelter or organization or perhaps even ask a person to foster an animal. Others can also participate in this to help animals that are in need. To lessen the suffering of animals, we can volunteer at an organization called Wags N Paws Animal Rescue NC. We can also collect money/food to donate to organization who will help those in need. Requirements
Some things you would need to know is that helping out with any shelter or organization would benefit many animals that are in need. Too many animals are abandoned and abused. With the cooperation of all those who care and are willing to help we can better the lives of helpless. One of our goals is to contribute to improving the lives of those animals. Not even foster animals have a permanent home. While they may have someone who protects them they are still without a safe and everlasting home. Everyday I see people standing on the sides of roads or at gas stations asking for any amount of money so they can help themselves or their families live a better life. I always feel so hopeless when I see homeless people begging for money from strangers. That is why I would like to shed some light on this issue. Thousands of people in Wake County are homeless and it really saddens me to see people out of hope and struggle to get along in life. We are affected by homelessness because it should make a strong feeling in you whenever you see someone so hopeless asking for anything that you are willing to give them. Many less fortunate people also die from exposure, starvation, and/or dehydration. According to an article on wakegov.com, “Over the course if a year, more than 4,000 different individuals experience homelessness in Wake County.” You should care about homelessness because you or a loved one could be in a situation identical to someone on the side of the road. If you were to “put yourself in someone else’s shoes” you for a fact would not want to be homeless begging for anything you could get a hold of.
To help with homelessness you can donate to a food bank or homeless shelter in Wake County, or really anywhere you live. You can also make sure you always carry around at least 20 dollars cash to be able to give someone some money. A more hands-on approach could be to make care baskets and fill them with necessary items and give them to homeless shelters or to someone you see in need. I would not be myself if not for some of the amazing experiences I have had. There are also other people I have met that I would never have known if not for these new experiences. Meeting new people in new times has made me who I am and I feel I can relate to people a whole lot now since being in different situations with new people.
In October of fourth grade, when I was 9 years old, my mom told me she had signed me up for my first audition at Raleigh Little Theatre. I didn’t know what to expect at first. When she told me, I just kind of stood there blankly. A grin soon showed up on my face and I lit up with excitement. I could not wait for my audition! I practiced for a few weeks, doing my monologue in front of the mirror so I could see how I looked while reciting it. I wanted to be more than prepared for this audition. I got to the theater and it was rather large for being the Raleigh “Little” Theatre. It had the certain feel of a theater, how everyone was so welcoming and it smelled slightly of wood shavings. A woman welcomed me, who I assumed was the director of the show. I walked in joyfully with a skip in my step and sat down in chair 11. I waited for a while for other children to show up, and eventually a lady went to the center of the room and started talking about the audition process and how they “have never not let a child take a class because of the inability to pay.” We started the auditions. Every time someone went up that wasn’t good I would shake my head to my mom and she would give me the face that all moms make when you’re doing something you shouldn’t. Before it got to be my turn, three other girls had already done the same monologue as me. I was completely crushed and thought that it would be hard to be original. I looked up to my mom and she was nodding her her head and smiling, bringing my confidence back up. I went to the center of the stage where the “X” was and said my name and the name of my monologue and started making it my own. As soon as I left that theatre, I knew I had done a good job because even though I had never done and audition before, I didn’t forget anything or stutter on any words. We had to wait a few days for the call back list to come out, but I ended up on it! I went for callbacks and they had me speak for the lead the whole time. Once my mom and I left she said, “I think the people they had in the last group are going to get the roles.” As fate would have it, I did end up getting the lead role. I did the run of the show and sobbed into my dad’s arms at the end of the last show. I loved it so much and I made so many new friends. Since having this experience I have done many shows and also got so into acting that I joined a talent agency. Being in the theater community has made a huge impact on my life, which is why I believe that new experiences shape who we are. |
