11/7/2017 0 Comments This I BelieveThis I believe: new experiences shape who we are. I would not be myself if not for some of the amazing experiences I have had. There are also other people I have met that I would never have known if not for these new experiences. Meeting new people in new times has made me who I am and I feel I can relate to people a whole lot now since being in different situations with new people.
In October of fourth grade, when I was 9 years old, my mom told me she had signed me up for my first audition at Raleigh Little Theatre. I didn’t know what to expect at first. When she told me, I just kind of stood there blankly. A grin soon showed up on my face and I lit up with excitement. I could not wait for my audition! I practiced for a few weeks, doing my monologue in front of the mirror so I could see how I looked while reciting it. I wanted to be more than prepared for this audition. I got to the theater and it was rather large for being the Raleigh “Little” Theatre. It had the certain feel of a theater, how everyone was so welcoming and it smelled slightly of wood shavings. A woman welcomed me, who I assumed was the director of the show. I walked in joyfully with a skip in my step and sat down in chair 11. I waited for a while for other children to show up, and eventually a lady went to the center of the room and started talking about the audition process and how they “have never not let a child take a class because of the inability to pay.” We started the auditions. Every time someone went up that wasn’t good I would shake my head to my mom and she would give me the face that all moms make when you’re doing something you shouldn’t. Before it got to be my turn, three other girls had already done the same monologue as me. I was completely crushed and thought that it would be hard to be original. I looked up to my mom and she was nodding her her head and smiling, bringing my confidence back up. I went to the center of the stage where the “X” was and said my name and the name of my monologue and started making it my own. As soon as I left that theatre, I knew I had done a good job because even though I had never done and audition before, I didn’t forget anything or stutter on any words. We had to wait a few days for the call back list to come out, but I ended up on it! I went for callbacks and they had me speak for the lead the whole time. Once my mom and I left she said, “I think the people they had in the last group are going to get the roles.” As fate would have it, I did end up getting the lead role. I did the run of the show and sobbed into my dad’s arms at the end of the last show. I loved it so much and I made so many new friends. Since having this experience I have done many shows and also got so into acting that I joined a talent agency. Being in the theater community has made a huge impact on my life, which is why I believe that new experiences shape who we are.
